Chemical Gas Attacks In Latvia
On 23 of September (6 October) 1916 was carry out for the first time in the territory of Latvia a German chemical cloud attack in Ikskile region. On the the " Island of Death " perished two battalions of Russians 173- GO of the Kamenetske Regiment (approximately 2500 soldiers or everyone who was on this Island ).
During December 1916 at the Riga Front - once more.
10 (23) January 1917, German shelled chemical shells on both sides of the the Lielupe River . Germans attempted with chemical shells to choke the Russian batteries and reserves before their counterattack.
17 (30) January of 1917 German shelling by the chemical shells of the region of kaltsiyemskogo highway and Machine-gun hill before its counterattack.
19 August (1 September) 1917 from 04-00 to 07-00 mornings - German shelled with chemicals the Ikskile region from Daugava river to the mouth of Jugla within the framework of the Riga offensive operations of the German Army to suppress the Russian artillery before their own pre attack artillery preparation.
The chemical weaponry was not used during the World War II at the front, but it is interesting to note that the soldiers of the Wehrmacht to the very end of the war almost all had with them gas masks, whereas the Red Army gas masks disappeared approximately since 1943.
